Perlman in the news

Renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman, who is playing a recital in San Antonio March 19th, has left his conducting position in Westchester, NY. Read more about the story here.
Perlman will be at Lila Cockrell Theater Saturday March 19th at 7:30pm with pianist Rohan DeSilva.  Tickets are available here.

(Project) Sing Sing Sing!

The Children’s Chorus of San Antonio (CCSA) shines in "Project: Sing!" at Our Lady of the Lake University tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Thiry Auditorium.
Project: Sing! is CCSA’s neighborhood-based satellite program that gives area children the opportunity to sing, learn, share and excel. PS:OLLU is in its tenth season and provides tuition-free programs to over 70 students from San Antonio and Edgewood ISDs.
Singers represent the 10 schools spanning grades 3-6 and receive the same level of curriculum and instruction as CCSA’s core programs. CCSA continues to provide exceptional experiences in choral music education and performance to over 300 children and youth annually.
The programs include five performing ensembles for children and youth ages seven to 18; “Music Together” an early-childhood music program for infants and toddlers ages birth to five; “Big Kids” for youngsters ages five to seven; and Project: Sing! a neighborhood-based satellite ensemble for elementary children in Harlandale, San Antonio and Edgewood school districts.
The CCSA singers who represent San Antonio and the surrounding communities perform in a variety of concerts throughout the city. CCSA's advanced choirs have traveled nationwide boasting feature performances, tours to Europe and Canada and have been featured on NBC-TV's Today Show. CCSA’s ensembles regularly perform with the San Antonio Symphony, San Antonio Mastersingers and the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio among others.

Free Trade Baroque

Cellist Frederick Edelen and harpsichordist Christina Edelen will present a concert of music of the French Baroque on Thursday evening, February 24, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church (11 St. Luke's Lane, San Antonio). Special guests include tenor Tony Boutte´ and baroque flutist Colin St. Martin. The concert will feature music by Rameau, Monteclair, and Boismortier and the Coffee Cantata of Nicolas Bernier.

GTOC: Bonyage YOSA!

This Monday night, YOSA presents a Farewell concert on their way to China. Host John Clare will be embedded with the orchestra from June 16-28 and present reports onair and online! Summer Night Concert Schoenbrunn on DVD

On the 4th of June, 2009, Daniel Barenboim and the Vienna Philharmonic presented a free open-air concert on the grounds of Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. Over 100,000 visitors were present in the audience for this charming occasion.
Recorded and filmed by Austrian Television (ORF), the concert will be broadcast world-wide in more than 50 countries and will be released on DVD tomorrow, Tuesday August 25th. The US Broadcast on PBS is currently scheduled for September 16th (KLRN in San Antonio).
In the audience that evening were composer Richard Danielpour and KPAC host John Clare (seen before the concert left) who were in Vienna for the world premiere of Danielpour's Souvenirs on Philippe Entremont's 75th birthday (June 7th).
The concert shared a theme: Night. So we heard Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik; de Falla's Nights in the Gardens of Spain; Mussorgsky/Rimsky-Korsakov's A Night on Bald Mountain; and Strauss II's Thousand and One Nights Waltz; plus encores Josef & Johann Strauss and Mariano Mores. All in all, a wonderful 93 minutes with one of the world's greatest ensembles! Besides the concert, views of the Schoenbrunn grounds and palace are seen, as well as gorgeous shots of the moon, fireworks and eerily appropriate fog/smoke (we're sure it was artifically made via dry ice).
You also get a wonderful sense of how many folks were there, and just how large the grounds are with stunning camera work. Check out this video from that night of a large robotic crane camera in action. You can even spot Danielpour & Clare in the audience, especially just after Barenboim announces the encores! Of course, the real magic comes from the Vienna Philharmonic in music they were born to play. (Danielpour is pictured in b&w with Christian Buchmann introducing him to Barenboim after the concert).

Five Browns in Kerrville

The Five Browns performed Monday and Tuesday in Kerrville. They spoke with John Clare, and also gave an outreach concert Tuesday morning, see some of it below!

Concert postponed!

The Mid Texas Symphony has delayed their concert this weekend as the city of New Braunfels has closed the Civic Center to public events.

Visiting Composer: Jake Heggie

Composer and pianist Jake Heggie is coming to the Texas Lutheran University campus April 27-29 as artist in residence. While on campus he will present two recitals and conduct a master class, all open to the public.
Heggie is the composer of the acclaimed operas “Dead Man Walking,” “Three Decembers,” “The End of the Affair,” the lyric drama “To Hell and Back,” and the musical scene “At the Statue of Venus.” The recipient of a 2005-06 Guggenheim Fellowship, he has composed more than 200 songs, as well as concerti, orchestral works and chamber music. He is currently at work on an epic opera for the Dallas Opera based on Melville’s Moby Dick, and has been asked to develop an opera project for the Metropolitan Opera and Lincoln Center Theatre.
On April 29, Heggie will perform his compositions along with guest artists Jennifer Black, Rachel Fry, John Seesholtz, Laura Jenschke, and Karla Hamelin. The recital, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Ayers Recital Hall of the Schuech Fine Arts Center on the TLU campus.
A “Recital and Conversation with Jake Heggie” featuring TLU Students will begin at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 28 in Ayers Recital Hall and is open to the public.
A master class featuring composer and pianist Jake Heggie will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, April 27, in Ayers Recital Hall. Heggie will work with guest artists and students of the TLU School of Music. For more information about TLU, visit the university’s Web site at www.tlu.edu.
